Name:
Joanne Fong
Age:
27
Education:
B. Design (Visual Communications), MA (Animation and Interactive Media)
Occupation:
Animator, Illustrator, Designer
Creative Influences:
Animation wise I like the work of Studio 4C, Studio Ghibli, and Adam Phillips. I'm not a huge fan of the slick 3D stuff that comes out (although I do enjoy stuff like Pixar and Kung Fu Panda), I much prefer when 3D is used together with more hand drawn or painterly textures and rendered to give a more traditional 2D look. Illustrators that inspire me are James Jean, Shaun Tan and APAK.
Software/Hardware/Camera of Choice:
I work in a whole range of software but I for animating I use mainly Flash, Photoshop and After Effects. Hardware? I'm a PC girl but wouldn't say no to a nice shiny Mac as long as I have my beloved Wacom tablet handy.
Awards/Grants/Achievements:
So far pretty slim pickings! My partner (Juan) and I won 3rd prize in a Channel 31 TV Ident comp and also a group animation I made with a whole group of people from my Master's course ("Eyes Wide Open") made it into the "Best of the Rest" screenings for Tropfest 2007.
Tell us about a piece of work you are particularly proud of and why?
I would have to say my final project for my Master's (a music video called "Oceans") mostly because it was such a huge learning experience and I can't believe I managed to finish it from conception to script to full video in 13 weeks! A few anxiety attacks never go astray when you are working towards a deadline and it was a great feeling to see it screened at the graduate showcase.
